Gorgonia Care Guide

Gorgonians, or sea fans, are branching soft corals that grow in flat, fan-like shapes perpendicular to the water current, creating dramatic architectural structures in the reef tank. Both photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic (NPS) varieties are available — photosynthetic species from the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean are significantly easier to keep, while NPS gorgonians require dedicated target feeding. Place photosynthetic gorgonians in the mid to upper tank under moderate PAR (100–250 PAR) with moderate to high flow oriented to pass through the fan structure. Standard reef parameters apply: alkalinity 7.5–9 dKH, calcium 400–440 ppm, and temperature 25–27°C.

The key to gorgonian success is flow orientation. In the wild, sea fans grow perpendicular to the prevailing current to maximise food capture and gas exchange. Replicate this by positioning the fan face into the main flow path. Photosynthetic species are relatively straightforward once established, requiring no target feeding beyond what light provides. NPS gorgonians demand commitment — feed fine particulate foods, phytoplankton, or baby brine shrimp several times per week using a feeding syringe or turkey baster. Without regular feeding, NPS species will slowly starve and lose tissue.

Fragging gorgonians involves cutting branches with sharp scissors or bone cutters and wedging frags into rubble or holes in rockwork. They do not glue well due to their flexible skeleton, so mechanical anchoring works best. Australian reef shops stock a range of photosynthetic gorgonians, which are the recommended starting point. NPS varieties are specialist animals best reserved for experienced reefers with a proven feeding routine. Gorgonians add a unique, dramatic vertical element that few other corals can match.
