Stichodactyla Care Guide

Stichodactyla, commonly known as carpet anemones, are among the most impressive and most dangerous anemones in the reef hobby. The two main species kept are Stichodactyla haddoni (Haddon's carpet) and Stichodactyla gigantea (giant carpet). These are expert-only animals with a potent sting capable of killing fish and severely irritating human skin — always wear gloves when working near them. They require a mature, established reef system (twelve months minimum) with strong lighting (PAR 300–500), moderate flow, and pristine water: alkalinity 7.5–9 dKH, calcium 400–450 ppm, and temperature 25–27°C.

Carpet anemones are large, powerful animals that can exceed 60 cm across. Their dense mat of short, extremely sticky tentacles can trap and consume small fish, shrimp, and any coral that comes into contact. They are not suitable for mixed reef tanks with small fish or valuable coral collections. Like all anemones, carpets will wander until satisfied with conditions, and a wandering 50 cm carpet anemone will destroy everything in its path. Place them on the sand bed or a large, flat rock surface in an area with strong light. Protect all pump intakes with guards — a carpet anemone pulled into a powerhead is a catastrophic event for the entire tank.

Carpet anemones are photosynthetic but require regular target feeding with large meaty foods — whole prawns, fish pieces, or silversides — once or twice weekly. They host several clownfish species, with Clark's clownfish being a natural companion. Australian-sourced S. haddoni are available through specialist marine retailers. Only attempt carpet anemones if you have a dedicated large tank, are prepared for their aggressive nature, and understand that they will be the dominant animal in any system they inhabit.
