Acropora
Staghorn Coral · Table Coral
The crown jewel of SPS corals. Acropora are fast-growing, branching and tabling corals prized for their vivid colours and intricate growth forms, but they demand pristine water quality and stable parameters.
Acropora Care Guide
Acropora are the pinnacle of SPS keeping and demand a mature, stable reef system. Aim for calcium at 420–450 ppm, alkalinity at 7.5–9 dKH, and magnesium at 1350–1400 ppm, with near-zero nitrate and phosphate. Temperature stability is critical — Australian summers can push tank temps above 27°C, so invest in a quality chiller or fan system before adding Acropora. They need intense PAR (300–500+) and chaotic, turbulent flow to mimic their natural reef crest habitat.
Place Acropora in the upper third of your tank where light and flow are strongest. Acclimate new frags slowly over several weeks by starting them lower and raising them gradually. Many hobbyists find that Australian-sourced Acropora from the Great Barrier Reef are among the hardiest available, already adapted to our water temperatures. Avoid placing different Acropora species too close together — they will wage chemical warfare and the loser will rapidly tissue necrosis (RTN).
Feeding is optional but beneficial. Broadcast-feeding amino acids and fine coral foods like reef roids a couple of times per week can enhance colour and growth. Fragging is straightforward — simply snap or cut branches with coral cutters and superglue to frag plugs. Watch closely for Acropora-eating flatworms (AEFW) and red bugs, which are common pests in Australia. Regular dipping of new frags in CoralRx or Bayer is essential quarantine practice.
