Bernardpora

Bernardpora is a relatively new genus, recently reclassified from Montipora based on distinct skeletal characteristics. For reef aquarists, the practical care is very similar to Montipora, making them an accessible SPS choice. Maintain calcium at 400–440 ppm, alkalinity at 7.5–9 dKH, and temperature between 25–27°C. Like Montipora, Bernardpora tolerate slightly higher nutrient levels than Acropora and adapt well to a range of moderate-to-high lighting conditions.

Place Bernardpora in the mid to upper sections of your tank with moderate to high light (PAR 150–350) and moderate flow. They grow in encrusting to plating forms, spreading across rockwork in a manner very similar to encrusting Montipora species. Orient plating specimens to catch light across their surface for optimal growth. Colour varieties include greens, purples, and browns, and they can display attractive fluorescence under blue-spectrum lighting.

Fragging follows the same approach as Montipora — use bone cutters or a bandsaw to separate pieces, which will readily encrust onto new surfaces. Because Bernardpora are a recent taxonomic split, many specimens in the hobby may still be labelled as Montipora. Australian reefers may encounter them without realising they are a distinct genus. The same pest vigilance applies as with Montipora — check for montipora-eating nudibranchs and dip all new specimens. Their Montipora-like hardiness combined with their status as a newer genus in the hobby makes Bernardpora an interesting talking point for coral enthusiasts.
