Montipora Care Guide

Montipora are widely regarded as the most beginner-friendly SPS genus and an excellent stepping stone from LPS to stony coral keeping. They come in three main growth forms — plating (capricornis), branching (digitata), and encrusting — each offering different visual appeal. Maintain calcium at 400–440 ppm, alkalinity at 7.5–9 dKH, and temperature between 25–27°C. Montipora tolerate slightly higher nutrients than Acropora, making them more forgiving in systems that are still maturing.

Placement depends on the growth form. Plating Montiporas (Monti Caps) do well in the mid-to-upper tank angled to catch light across their surface, while encrusting varieties can be placed on rockwork at various heights. Branching digitata types prefer higher positions with good flow. Montipora respond well to moderate-to-high PAR (200–400) and moderate, indirect flow. They come in an extraordinary array of colours — rainbow montis, sunset montis, and the iconic Superman montipora are all highly sought after by Australian collectors.

Fragging Montipora is easy. Plating types can be cut with a bandsaw or tile saw, while branching forms snap cleanly. Frags grow quickly and make excellent trading stock. The main pest to watch for is the Montipora-eating nudibranch — tiny white slugs that leave circular bite marks and can decimate a colony if left unchecked. Quarantine and dip all new Montipora arrivals thoroughly. In Australia, captive-propagated Montipora frags are abundant and affordable, making them the ideal first SPS purchase.
