Dendrophyllia

Dendro

LPS

A non-photosynthetic branching LPS coral that relies entirely on target feeding for nutrition. Dendrophyllia are striking but demanding — they require multiple feeds per week and do best in shaded, lower-flow areas.

Dendrophyllia Care Guide

Dendrophyllia are non-photosynthetic (NPS) branching corals that represent one of the more demanding challenges in reef keeping. Unlike most corals, they contain no zooxanthellae and rely entirely on captured food for energy. This means committed, regular target feeding is non-negotiable. Place them in a shaded area with low to no direct light and gentle flow — enough to deliver food but not so strong that it prevents the polyps from extending.

Water parameters should be maintained at standard reef levels: alkalinity 7.5–9.0 dKH, calcium 400–450 ppm, magnesium 1300–1400 ppm, and temperature 25–26 °C. Feed three to five times per week with a variety of meaty foods: mysis, brine shrimp, cyclops, and finely chopped prawn or fish. Many successful Dendrophyllia keepers use a feeding hat or dome to concentrate food around the coral and prevent it dispersing into the water column. Polyps typically extend at night or in dim conditions, so plan feeding sessions accordingly.

Dendrophyllia grow slowly and demand patience and dedication. They can be fragged by cutting branches with bone cutters, and frags typically recover well if feeding is maintained. The Australian hobby has a small but dedicated NPS community, and these corals are occasionally available through specialist retailers. Be honest about your commitment level before purchasing — skipping feeds for even a week or two can lead to tissue recession.
