Diaseris
Disc Coral · Cycloseris
A small, free-living disc coral now formally reclassified under Cycloseris, though the hobby name persists. Diaseris are unique in their ability to reproduce asexually by fragmenting, and they prefer a sand bed placement with gentle flow.
Diaseris Care Guide
Diaseris (now formally reclassified under Cycloseris, though the hobby name persists) are fascinating small disc corals with a unique trick — they can reproduce asexually by fragmenting their skeleton into pie-shaped wedges, each of which regenerates into a complete disc. Place them on the sand bed under moderate PAR (75–150 PAR) with gentle flow. Like other free-living corals, they should never be glued to rockwork.
Maintain standard reef parameters: alkalinity 7.5–9.0 dKH, calcium 400–450 ppm, magnesium 1300–1400 ppm, and temperature 25–26 °C. Diaseris are photosynthetic and not demanding feeders, though they benefit from occasional target feeding with fine particulate foods. They are small corals that won’t dominate a tank but add interesting diversity to the sand bed. Their self-fragmenting reproduction means a single coral can eventually produce multiple offspring without any intervention.
Diaseris are peaceful corals with minimal aggression. They are relatively uncommon in the Australian hobby compared to Fungia but occasionally appear through specialist coral retailers. Their small size and gentle temperament make them ideal companions for other sand-bed species. These corals are found throughout the Indo-Pacific and are well-suited to typical Australian reef tank conditions.
