Goniopora
Flowerpot Coral
A striking LPS coral with long, daisy-like polyps that create a bouquet effect. Goniopora were historically considered difficult but modern understanding of their needs — stable parameters and supplemental feeding — has improved success rates significantly.
Goniopora Care Guide
Goniopora have a reputation as difficult corals, but modern husbandry has dramatically improved success rates. The key is parameter stability and supplemental feeding. Provide moderate PAR (100–150 PAR) and gentle to moderate flow — enough to make the long polyps sway gracefully but not so strong that they cannot extend fully. Place Goniopora in the mid-level of your tank, ideally where they have room to expand without touching neighbours, as their polyps can extend 10 cm or more beyond the skeleton.
Water parameters should be rock-steady: alkalinity 7.5–8.5 dKH, calcium 400–440 ppm, magnesium 1300–1400 ppm, and temperature 25–26 °C. Goniopora are more sensitive to alkalinity swings than many LPS, so consistent dosing or a calcium reactor is recommended. Target feed two to three times per week with fine particulate foods, phytoplankton, or amino acid supplements. Many experienced Aussie reefers credit regular feeding as the single most important factor in long-term Goniopora success.
Australian-sourced Goniopora, particularly from the Great Barrier Reef region, tend to be hardier than imported specimens. They are generally peaceful and won’t sting neighbours, but give them clearance for their extended polyps. Fragging is possible but tricky — use a band saw to cut through the skeleton and ensure each frag has several healthy polyps. Recovery can be slow, so patience is essential.
