Scolymia
Scolymia · Scoly
A solitary, disc-shaped LPS coral prized by collectors for its extraordinary colour combinations and patterns. Scolymia are slow-growing and do best in low flow on the sand bed or lower rockwork.
Scolymia Care Guide
Scolymia are prized collector corals, with exceptional colour morphs commanding premium prices in the Australian market. These solitary, disc-shaped LPS prefer the sand bed or lower rockwork with moderate PAR (75–150 PAR) and very gentle flow. Direct current will cause the tissue to retract and the coral to appear stressed. Find a sheltered spot where light reaches but water movement is indirect and laminar.
Stable parameters are important: alkalinity 7.5–9.0 dKH, calcium 400–450 ppm, magnesium 1300–1400 ppm, and temperature 25–26 °C. Scolymia feed readily when offered small meaty foods like mysis or finely chopped prawn once or twice weekly. They extend a feeding response mostly at night, so evening target feeding sessions tend to be most effective. Consistent feeding helps maintain the fleshy tissue and vibrant colouration these corals are known for.
Scolymia are solitary polyps and cannot be fragged — each coral is a single individual, which partly explains why rare colour morphs hold their value. They can extend short sweeper tentacles, so give them a small buffer zone. Aussie Scolymia, including the highly sought-after Australian species, are regularly available through local coral retailers and represent some of the finest specimens in the global hobby. Handle with care during transport — their fleshy tissue bruises easily.
