Nemenzophyllia
Fox Coral · Jasmine Coral · Ridge Coral
A delicate, plating LPS coral with translucent, wavy tissue and a distinctive ridged skeleton. Fox corals prefer low light and gentle flow, and their thin tissue can be easily damaged by strong currents or aggressive neighbours.
Nemenzophyllia Care Guide
Nemenzophyllia, commonly known as fox coral or jasmine coral, is a delicate plating LPS with translucent, wavy tissue over a distinctive ridged skeleton. Place them in a shaded, low-flow area of your tank under low PAR (30–75 PAR) with very gentle, indirect water movement. Their thin tissue is easily damaged by strong current or physical contact, so choose a protected spot on lower rockwork where they won’t be disturbed.
Keep water parameters stable: alkalinity 7.5–9.0 dKH, calcium 400–450 ppm, magnesium 1300–1400 ppm, and temperature 25–26 °C. Nemenzophyllia are primarily photosynthetic despite preferring low light, and they benefit from occasional target feeding with fine particulate foods or reef roids. Their translucent tissue gives them an ethereal, almost jellyfish-like quality when healthy and fully expanded, which is one of their main appeals.
Nemenzophyllia are peaceful corals that won’t harm neighbours, but they are vulnerable to stings from more aggressive species, so choose their neighbours carefully. Fragging is possible by carefully breaking plates, though the thin skeleton is fragile. Handle with extreme care during transport and acclimatisation — tissue damage is slow to heal. These corals are periodically available from Australian coral retailers and make a beautiful addition to low-light areas of a mixed reef tank.
